2nd Buckwheat Flower Festival concludes with colourful celebration

The 2nd Ladakh Buckwheat Flower Festival 2022 was celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm on September 9 and 10 at Skurbuchan village.
The Buckwheat Flower Festival was organised by the UT Ladakh Administration and LAHDC Leh in collaboration with Skitchan Kunfan Deton Tsogspa, Skurbuchan. The two-day festival is marking its significance in the tourism calendar of Ladakh attracting a large number of tourists to the lower belt of Sham region.

Different cuisine prepared from buckwheat and other farmers’ produce, traditional utensils, and agricultural tools were displayed to the public. Also, cultural performances were performed by different societies and villagers.

The festival was inaugurated by Member of Parliament, Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal on September 9.

Sharing that Sham region produces huge amounts of apricot in Leh district, MP Ladakh added that the ongoing development of roads in the region would boost the economy and also play a significant role in transporting fruits and vegetables to outside markets.

On the concluding day, SSP, Leh, PD Nitya expressed joy over attending such a harvest festival for the first time. She called the Buckwheat Flower Festival a unique blend of traditionalism and modernism. Also, she appreciated the organisers for conducting the festival in its natural environs in the village.

She expressed hope that the local entrepreneurs would strive hard to promote local food products in markets outside Ladakh.

ADC Leh, Sonam Chosjor lauded the efforts of the organisers in reviving the traditional harvest festival and expressed hope to celebrate the Buckwheat festival on a grand scale in the future. He added that such festivals are a medium to promote and revive the cultivation of buckwheat which has huge market potential. He said that this festival would also promote tourism in the Sham region.

Councillor Skurbuchan, Lundup Dorjai expressed gratitude to the guests and everyone for making the 2nd Buckwheat Flower Festival a success.
