In the aftermath of a tragic incident at Suru River, where a young girl lost her life due to a sudden water release, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, the Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) in Kargil, convened a meeting on November 4 with the project head of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) in Kargil, along with other officials.
During the meeting, NHPC representatives provided immediate financial relief, offering ₹50,000 in cash to the CEC and ensuring a prompt ex gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh for the victim’s family.
Dr. Akhoon stressed the urgency of implementing enhanced safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The discussion underscored the collaborative efforts between LAHDC, Kargil, and NHPC in addressing the aftermath of the tragedy. Both parties expressed their shared commitment to improving safety measures, promoting community welfare, and creating local employment opportunities.
Additionally, discussions revolved around various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. CEC Akhoon requested NHPC’s support in establishing a portable lodge for patient attendants at the district hospital in Kargil, aiming to enhance healthcare facilities for local residents.
In a proactive move to boost employment prospects for the local population, Dr. Akhoon urged NHPC to prioritize the recruitment of local candidates for positions within the corporation. Supporting the region’s development and welfare remains a central focus for LAHDC, Kargil, and NHPC.
Furthermore, the CEC highlighted the longstanding issue faced by the residents of Minjee village (Khul issue), to which NHPC officials assured their attention and action. This collaborative effort between local authorities and NHPC reflects their dedication to addressing community concerns and fostering a safer, more prosperous environment
