Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kargil, in partnership with Girls Higher Secondary School, observed World Environment Day on June 5th at the Syed Mehdi Auditorium Hall, Kargil.
The event was graced by the presence of Chief Education Officer Kargil, S. D. Namgyal, as the chief guest. It commenced with a recitation of the holy Quran, followed by a welcoming address from Kaneez Fatima, Principal of Girls Higher Secondary School, Kargil.
The chief guest delivered a comprehensive overview of the significance of World Environment Day, emphasizing the adoption of greener technologies for achieving sustainability. He applauded the students’ participation, regarding them as stewards of the land.
Dr. Mohd Mehdi Akhone, Chief Scientist and Head of KVK Kargil, delivered a lecture on environmental protection in Ladakh, stressing the importance of planting species like Artemisia and cotoneaster in barren hills. He also highlighted the emergence of defoliating insect pests in Ladakh and the need for timely action to prevent environmental devastation.
Participants were urged to discourage the use of plastics and promote local food, while Dr. Faizan Ahmed, Head of Mountain Agriculture Research and Extension Service, provided insights into environmental degradation and drought resilience strategies.
The program was attended by scientists, supporting staff of KVK, students, teachers, and media personnel. It included a skit highlighting the importance of trees, followed by interactive sessions addressing participants’ queries.
The attendees expressed gratitude to KVK Kargil and looked forward to future programs. The session concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Mohd Ishaq, senior lecturer at GGHS Kargil.
