The Botany Department of Eliezer Joldan Memorial College Leh recently arranged a field trip for students enrolled in the second-semester skill enhancement course. On April 19, they visited the vermicomposting unit at the Defense Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) in Leh.
The purpose of the trip was to augment the students’ practical knowledge and skills in vermicomposting. DIHAR is renowned for its expertise in vermicomposting techniques, particularly in high-altitude areas like Ladakh. Consequently, the students were keen to observe and learn from the advanced practices and technologies employed at DIHAR.
The excursion offered valuable insights into vermicomposting for the students, inspiring them to actively engage in environmental sustainability initiatives in the region. Vermicomposting serves as an alternative waste management method, further emphasizing its significance.
During the visit, Deskyong Namgyal, the Technical Officer, shared his experiences with the students, discussing the adoption of vermicomposting and its importance within the agricultural system. Additionally, Assistant Professor of Botany, Dr. Tsetan Dolker, imparted her expertise on vermicomposting, emphasizing its eco-friendliness and sustainability. She highlighted vermicomposting as a method of converting organic waste into vermicompost.
