On February 21st, the spirit of social justice resonated through Leh Elders village as Helpage India, along with the People’s Action Group for Inclusion and Rights (PAGIR) and District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), organized a thought-provoking event in honor of World Social Justice Day.
Advocate Neema Stanzin, Deputy Legal Aid Counsel, shed light on the legal aspects of social justice, highlighting its crucial role in empowering senior citizens. She elaborated on how legal aid bridges the gap for older adults, providing guidance on healthcare, property disputes, and pension rights.
Dr. Tanushree Malakar, Assistant Professor in Social Work at EJM College Leh, delved into the social fabric of Ladakh, focusing on women’s participation in political and decision-making arenas. She shed light on existing caste-based discrimination and urged for open discussions and inclusivity within the community.
Stanzin Angmo, representing PAGIR, brought forth the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in Ladakh, advocating for their rights and access to equal opportunities.
The interactive session buzzed with active participation from PAGIR, OAH Leh, Elderline, and MHU staff. Attendees gained valuable insights into their rights and available resources, leaving empowered and informed.
This collaborative event served as a potent platform for raising awareness about social justice issues and fostering a more equitable society for all in Ladakh.
