On August 9, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), laid the foundation stone for the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) by POWERGRID at the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat. During the ceremony, the LG inquired about the transmission line’s reach, electricity tariffs, power supply duration, and transmission losses. He stressed minimizing transmission losses and ensuring power access to remote and strategically important areas in Ladakh.
The LG directed POWERGRID to consult with the Chairmen of LAHDC Leh and Kargil to address local needs, and to minimize the use of agricultural land for transmission lines due to its scarcity in Ladakh. He also requested that villages along the transmission routes receive electricity and emphasized adhering to the project timeline to avoid cost overruns.
Additionally, the LG requested that POWERGRID prioritize procuring transformers for Ladakh and grow fodder at the Solar Power Project site in Pang for local livestock.
Chairman of LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson, asked to include a 33 KV transmission line for Lingshed village in the RDSS and raised concerns about payment delays to local contractors. Chairman of LAHDC Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, highlighted Kargil’s renewable energy potential and requested a survey and electricity for villages along the Drass-Zanskar transmission route.
RK Tyagi, Chairman & Managing Director of POWERGRID, assured the LG that ongoing projects, including the Leh-Nubra Transmission line, would be completed on schedule and emphasized Ladakh’s role in national green energy efforts, particularly the Puga renewable project.
Executive Director of POWERGRID, Rajesh Kumar, provided a project status update, and a video presentation on project progress was shown. Key attendees included Chairman & Managing Director of POWERGRID, RK Tyagi; Executive Directors of POWERGRID; and various officials from POWERGRID and the Power Development Department (PDD) Ladakh.
